Things You Should Know Before Selling on Amazon Australia
Before we jump into it, it’s important to take note of the following information first:
- Amazon FBA (Fulfilment by Amazon) will definitely be part of Amazon Australia and will be included in Stage 2 of the launch together with Amazon Prime. It is unclear at this point when this will happen, however, so in the meantime you will be in charge of shipping your products to buyers via FBM (Fulfilment by Merchant). Learn the differences between Amazon FBA and FBM.
- Amazon Australia fees: For retailers who wish to have their products listed, a monthly fee of $49.95 (plus GST) is required.
- Amazon will also be taking a 6 to 15% commission depending on the product category.
- Unlike other Amazon marketplaces that grant automatic approval, you need to be approved first in order to start selling products on this particular platform.
Apart from the points mentioned above, everything else should be pretty much the same as other Amazon marketplaces, be it the US, UK or Europe.
Now that we’ve got those out of the way, let’s dive into the steps you need to take to start selling your products on Amazon:
Find a Product to Sell
If you’ve had experience finding products to sell on Amazon US before this shouldn’t be especially difficult.
There are product research tools out there like Jungle Scout that will make the process easier, right? (You can learn more about that here.)
Well, not exactly.
You have to remember that Amazon Australia has just launched and chances are, products from the Australian marketplace won’t be in Jungle Scout or any similar apps just yet. And since there are no existing reviews yet due to the site’s infancy, it may be difficult to get ideas using the Australian market.
One of the best ways to address this issue is to simply find products using the Amazon US website instead and then determine whether they will be a good fit for the Australian market.
One advantage of the new Australian Amazon market is that there will be less competition and little or no reviews on products yet which means you are competing on an even playing field for products that you couldn’t compete with in other Amazon markets.
For example, it would be difficult to achieve success on the Amazon US platform by launching a popular product that already has many sellers with thousands of reviews. When you are searching for products to sell on Amazon USA, you would eliminate these types of products because there’s too much competition.
On Amazon Australia however, these products might provide great opportunities as each seller is starting with zero reviews so it is easier to compete, perform basic SEO, get reviews and establish your product as a leader for that niche.
Now that you are aware of what to look out for when searching for a product to sell, the next challenge is determining which of the products you find have the potential to sell on the Australian market.
We’ll leave the research for this part up to you but just consider that there’s little to no competition on Amazon Australia as of this moment. Being the first (or at least one of the first few) to successfully launch a popular product will give you a HUGE advantage and will definitely have the potential to generate large profits.
Once you’ve decided on which products to sell, it’s time to formalize everything and sign up. You can find the Amazon Australia seller sign up page here.
There are no defined criteria on who is allowed to sell on Amazon. You just need to have a business name and email address ready upon sign up. You will also be asked to provide a business website address though this is optional so if you don’t have one yet, that’s perfectly fine.
After you’ve signed up, a representative from Amazon will contact you to discuss the next steps including getting set up with Amazon Seller Central Australia.
What Are You Waiting for?
Being a pioneer in any given field will always be an advantage and with a promising new market like Amazon Australia opening its doors to potential sellers, being first in the game is an absolute must.
We’ve given you enough information on how to find a product that has the potential to sell so use this knowledge to the best of your ability and do it now because staying ahead of the competition at a time like this promises you a great future as an Amazon seller.
Good luck.
